Nicework created an exciting animated 60" television advertisement to highlight DSTV's diverse service offering and to promote First City Monument Bank's sponsorship of the network in Nigeria. The advert features detailed animated sequences to create a visually engaging advert that meets project goals.

First City Monument Bank (FCMB) is a wholesale banking group with a niche retail banking franchise, based in Lagos, Nigeria. FCMB is one of the major players in the Nigerian banking sector.

Discovery:

In Nigeria, DSTV is funded by FCMB. Production company, Threshold Creative, approached Nicework to create an animated advertisement that would promote DSTV in an inventive way as well as crediting FCMB for their sponsorship of the network.

Brief:

Nicework was commissioned to script and animate a 60" television advertisement that would highlight FCMB's involvement in providing DSTV to Nigeria. The advertisement had to be sized to screen size PAL 3x4.

Challenges:

  • Communicating DSTV's diverse offering in 60 seconds
  • Creating the impression that the advertisement was filmed in one seamless take
  • Providing a high-quality animated advertisement within a very limited 2 week time-frame

Tackling the brief:

DSTV's diverse offering was incorporated into the advertisement by creating design elements that referred to the different genres available on the network such as documentaries, sport, music, movies and series. These elements were linked to FCMB's sponsorship of DSTV in Nigeria by using denominations of Nigerian currency to reflect each genre on the network. 

A 3D camera effect was used to transition through the different currency denominations. The animation paid particular attention to detail, a noteworthy design element being the King Kong figure that featured 10,000 individual hairs. Animations were designed in Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator and then sequenced in After Effects.

Another requirement of the brief was to incorporate FCMB's main entrance into the advertisement. This problem was solved by incorporating a scene where the camera flies out of a frame in the wall and soars through the lobby. Cut–out characters were used to populate the space in the entrance and bring a human element to the scene.

Result:

  • An engaging animated advertisement that relays DSTV's exciting offering and FCMB's role as sponsor of DSTV in Nigeria
  • Completion of the project in two weeks
  • The coolest King Kong we have created- feel free to send us bananas as a congratulatory present
