Sea Point Days

Sea Point Days is a documentary, produced by Fireworx Media, which examines Cape Town's iconic Sea Point Promenade and the public swimming pool at its centre. Nicework was approached to create a website, posters, cards and branding for the documentary. Using a simple colour palette and bold colour blocks inspired by the film footage we were able to create a cohesive and successful promotional campaign.

Discovery:

Sea Point Days is a documentary, produced by Fireworx Media, which examines Cape Town's iconic Sea Point Promenade and the public swimming pool at its centre. Once a bastion of Apartheid exclusivity, it is nowadays unique in its apparently easy mix of age, race, gender, religion, wealth status and sexual orientation.

Using innovative film language, quirky charm and a combination of film formats, this visionary film captures not only the societal blend particular to this part of Cape Town, but also the conflicts and difficulties underlying it. Intimate and original vignettes alternate with powerful scenic shots, archive footage and observations of life, all leading towards a comprehensive and surprising view on what it means to be South African right now.

Nicework was excited to promote a local project of international calibre. We had the design and web skills and we also liked to swim so it was a no-brainer to agree to be involved.

Brief:

  • Design and develop a website to promote the documentary and to provide important information about the film
  • Create promotional material for the documentary including posters, a DVD cover design, cards and affiliated branding
  • Use stills from the film in the website design and promotional material to reflect the documentary's subject matter

Challenge:

A significant challenge was selecting images from the high-definition footage that would work well for promotional purposes.

Tackling the brief:

Nicework began our creative journey by drawing from the rich and beautiful footage of the documentary. Stills were strategically chosen to encapsulate the creative vision, tone and atmosphere of the documentary. This was a difficult task as the images also had to work in variety of formats.

A simple and bold colour palette was chosen from the selected images to be used throughout the collateral. A clean typeface and colour blocking was incorporated into the design treatment for its striking effect and its ability to relay information easily. The combination of a simple colour palette and bold colour blocks achieved an African look and feel, with a modern edge.

These striking design principles where then applied to all the promotional materials to create a cohesive brand identity for the documentary.

Result:

  • A happy client and a popular film
  • A coherent and striking collateral design that was extensible onto multiple media platforms
  • Effective marketing and promotion of the documentary
  • The documentary was flighted in a number of film festivals both locally and internationally
  • The film was shortlisted for awards in the Toronto International Film Festival, Joris Ivens Competition and the Dubai International Film Festival in 2008. It was also a finalist in the "Best Cinematography" and "Best Editor" categories at the DOC NZ 2009
