Xstrata CSI Book

Global mining company Xstrata wanted document their CSI efforts by creating a book that tells the stories of people from communities surrounding their mines. 

Client: Xstrata

Xstrata is a global mining company which operates in more than 20 countries around the world and produces commodities used in the manufacture of everything from building construction to mobile phones. In South Africa they have mines in the North West Province and Mpumalanga.

Discovery:

The communities that surround Xstratas mines, are in large part comprised of the families of its miners. This fact makes it imperative for the business to get involved and help where possible.

Brief:

• Layout the Xstrata CSI book using the company corporate identity
• Reflect the nature of the CSI initiative in the design of the layout

Tackling the Brief

We wanted the book to look like Xstrata’s personal scrapbook, telling the stories and accomplishments of the community.  To realise this, we used Polaroid-style image frames, background paper textures and illustrations.

The book was designed in landscape format, using the colours and illustrations from the recently refreshed Xstrata brand identity. Brightly coloured tapestry graphics referenced mining themes in a distinctly South African storytelling style.
