Richard Avedon

Posted by

Richard Avedon (1923-2004) has photographed some of the most significant and influential people of the 20th and early 21st centuries. These portraits have spanned the fields of culture, politics and literature. Avedon had an amazing eye for significant details to bring out the character of his subjects. The technical execution of his photographs are also quite something. Here are some of his works.

Tree House

Posted by

This beautiful two-storey private residence in Fire Island (USA) was designed by Bates Masi + Architects. The building is located in a grove of hollies and pines and the building reflects its organic surroundings. All exterior and interior wall surfaces and cabinets are rough cut cypress;  the  flooring is bleached oak. The second-storey level gives a view of the bay. Oh to live in fancy modernist tree-house…

Raymond Ackerman

Posted by

Nicework is currently working on a book for the commercial architectural firm Bentel Associates International. The Bentel architects are responsible for designing and constructing the majority of Pick n’ Pay stores in South Africa amongst other things. I got to interview Raymond Ackerman (the founder and head of Pick n’ Pay) yesterday in Cape Town. He was a good interviewee and offered me biscuits.

Keep your eyes peeled for further developments on the Bentel book. Its going to be a show stopper.

Hush Chair

Posted by

Naughtone’s hush chair is sophisticated and clean design at its best. It is made from a moulded playwood frame that is then upholstered in CMHR foams, with both hardwood and steel leg options. I think the grey/yellow colour contrast is brilliant.
