Sticks & Stones

To This Day is an animation based on the poem by Shane Koyczan’s spoken word poem of the same title. It is a poem about childhood bullying. The animation contains a 20 second animation collaboration from 87 different animators. It is absolutely stunning and it addresses many of the traumas that occur during childhood. It concludes by deeming the strength of the victim as beauty. The design is elegant complimented with an extremely well written piece of poetry; I tear up every time I watch it.

Sublime Opening Titles to the Style Frames Design Conference Animated by Eran Hilleli

Posted by

For the Style Frames Design Conference held last November in New York, Tel Aviv-based artist and animator Eran Hilleli was asked to create an opening titles sequence that would set the tone for the event and list the names of various speakers. The result is this short three-minute video of converging characters that’s almost too wonderful to describe. I’ve watched this at least 5 times over the last two months and every time it gives me chills. I wish this was a full-length movie, or more likely a video game, something more immersive to learn more about all the different creatures that appear so briefly. Music by Disasterpiece. An Immersive World of Visual Storytelling and Puzzle Solving in ‘Samorost 3’

Posted by

Prague-based Amanita Design, creators of the award-winning Mechinarium, recently released what may be their best game yet: Samorost 3. This deeply immersive puzzle game spans the ecosystems of 9 unusual planets as you encounter strange inhabitants and unlock increasingly complex secrets to advance to the next level. Amanita Design’s approach to creating completely non-verbal/non-textual games relies heavily on intuition, sound design, and symbolism to create environments that are practically interactive artworks. Samorost 3 is a long-awaited sequel in a series of first released in 2003 and 2005.

The music and sound design specifically are fantastic, and Amita provides all kinds of behind-the-scenes videos showing how they developed the quirky voices for each character and composed the accompanying soundtrack. I’ve only been playing for about two hours or so, but this game is truly wonderful. You can get it from the Apple App Store or download it from their website for your desktops.

Your type

Friction is a distorted geometric typeface that intentionally puts emphasis on it’s graphic appearance. The minimalistic core of the typeface is built around geometric shapes. Two secondary layers of graphic elements create more abstract letterforms. The many small moving parts create a fluttering, organic feeling.

Fix Florida by Costa Sunglasses

At one time, Florida was a waterman’s paradise, made up of pristine estuaries, and home to healthy fish populations. Recent events have put three of Florida’s estuaries in an environmental disorder, but these events are not new, they are caused by more than half a century of development, agriculture and water mismanagement.

Costa Sunglasses uses a sense of magic (and its loss over time) to bring attention to this environmental issue in an accessible and emotionally compelling way.
