Always Read The Manual

Posted by

The Manual is a printed and hand crafted journal that takes a fresh look at web design.

“The idea was to play on web design being a relatively young discipline, by creating an identity for the journal that felt older than its time, with references to heraldry, freemasonry, and old book illustrations (among other things).”

The first journal features illustrations by Raymond Biesinger, Olimpia Zagnoli, Christopher Gray, Jessica Hische, Owen Gatley, Ping Zhu and Superbrothers. It will be published three times a year.

The iPad has changed the landscape forever

Posted by

What an amazing thing this is. The way we interact with tech has changed forever. There is no tactile feedback in the typing, which is something that needs to be addressed. We have not spent decades addressing the ergonomics of things for them to be dumped completely. There is a distinct chance that I will be throwing my laptop in the sea in the coming months. As hard as I try to resist the Apple wave, this is the hardest product of theirs yet.

Instagram: The Numbers

Posted by

Mashable did an interesting article on the success of the iPhone camera app Instagram. The application combines social networking with photography so well that in the eight short months since its release Instagram now has millions of users.

Let’s get to the current stats:

Total users: +5 million

Total photographs uploaded: +95 million

Average number of photographs posted per day: 860 000

That is pretty darn impressive. Instagram’s early success can be partly attributed to a very popular API that’s now being accessed by more than 2,500 applications.

Perch: A really little CMS

Posted by

Perch is a really little content management system (CMS) that is perfect for a small website. It is  lightweight and easy for a developer to set up. At the very least it gives a client enough control to fix a typo or change their phone number.

It is sometimes difficult to justify adding a CMS to small websites. CMS’s take a fair amount of time to set up and tend to be heavy duty. They are better suited to websites that either have a lot of content or are going to be updated regularly. If your needs are small, developers will often try to lump you with a static HTML site. This is fine until you change your phone number and it takes them 3 months to update it. Fortunately, there are lightweight alternatives.

Make art not war – Walton Creel

Posted by

Walton Creel has an unique approach to his art. He uses a .22 caliber rifle to create portraits of animals on sheet metal. His choice of subject makes for an interesting artistic statement, as it uses a hunting weapon to immortalise things that would usually be hunted. A bringing to life rather than taking a life…

Sneakery slipperooties

What do you call a shoe that is a sneaker, a slipper and two types of boot at the same time? Nat-2 is an European shoe brand that has turned the world of footwear on its head with a 4-in-1 stackable shoe. Winner of a Designboom Red Dot Award in 2010, they have also created ranges for the Wu Tang Clan’s Wu Wear label and the new Transformers movie.
