Gerhard Demetz is an Italian artist and sculptor who creates life-like wooden sculptures of children on the cusp of adulthood. Using traditional wood carving techniques he creates figures that are both ominous and mesmerizing. Here is some information from his site:
“His sculptures of children are at the same time attractive and disquieting and rendered with an amazing perfection that is by no means rhetorical or classical. One of the most startling technical features is the construction using small woodblocks and juxtaposing finely polished parts to very rough and sketchy surfaces.”
The woodblocks makes the figure look pixelated, which is an imaginative contemporary take on traditional sculpted portraits. Demetz’s work is well worth a look.
