When we heard about this exciting project we couldn’t wait to spread the word. A skate park is being developed in Soweto! The site is a 1 hectare stand owned by City Parks, located next door to the COPESSA facility. The park will be a safe place for community members to socialise and will be equipped with facilities for extra curricular activities, including skateboarding and swimming, to give local kids a healthy and constructive focus outside of school.

The project was initiated by Nobs Mwanda Motjuwadi, affectionately known as “Dr Nobs”, who was recently  awarded with the Checkers Woman of the Year Award in the ‘Good Neighbour Against Crime’ category  for her service in the child abuse field for the past 17 years. GASS Architects are working closely with Dr Nobs in conceptualising the park, as well as key members of the community to achieve a design that will be responsive to the context. Top local skateboarders have been brought in to finalize the design for the skate park element.

Various promotional events will be held in the near future to raise awareness and funds for the project, which will include skateboarding demonstrations, musical acts and graffiti artists. We will keep you updated on these events. Please lend your support to this awesome project!
